Just because he's no longer a puppy does not mean his

Supplementing Your Dog's Diet

People are crazy about vitamins. Open up medicine cabinets around the world and no matter the culture, you'll often find an entire alphabet soup of products designed to round out our diets. It figures then that we often dose our dogs. You might give him a spoonful of yoghurt for extra calcium or ladle beef gravy into his bowl to give his coat added shine. But did you know you're doing your pooch a disservice? Scientists have proven that such additives often interfere with the balanced nutrition in dog food. In fact, they can stop the absorption of some important nutrients entirely leaving him with an upset stomach — or even skeletal problems. So before you offer him that cottage cheese, read this:

The Thinking Behind Supplements

We humans take vitamins because our modern-day meals often don't include all we need to stay healthy. But dogs eating high quality premium foods like Eukanuba already have perfectly balanced diets. Our trained nutritionists have seen to that. Still, you might persist because you want to increase palatability or add variety. (Maybe you simply enjoy cooking for your pet?) But the truth of the matter is that dogs aren't discerning. In general, they'll eat what we give them as long as they're satiated. (If you've "ruined" your dog on people food, you'll need to wean him off it. Please see our article "Your Dog and His Food Issues.") The key then is to choose a brand that both meets their nutritional needs and is tasty. We think we've accomplished that with our array of formulas — just ask all the dogs in your neighborhood who are eagerly anticipating suppertime.

Good Minerals Gone Bad

There has been a lot of information in the press lately about the problem with drug interactions in humans. But we also know that certain foods given to dogs in excess can produce adverse results. For example, meat contains 20 to 40 times more phosphorus than calcium, but a dog's body needs a specific ratio of them to keep it healthy. Therefore, Old Trusty's system will attempt to right that ratio by stealing calcium from his bones. We often see this in older dogs who lose their teeth to re-absorption of the bone from the lower jaw.

Dogs, like the rest of us, need a balanced diet to thrive. Lucky for you, you don't need to do anything more than open your pooch's bag of food and pour. If you want to play chef, cook for your mother-in-law. She'll probably appreciate it more than your pup.
