The Dog Days of Summer

Summer is in full swing and dogs everywhere want to beat the heat while having fun in the sun. Your dog has come to rely on you to make sure he plays safely in the sun, so follow these tips to help avoid overheating.

You may have thought that giving your dog a haircut will help him stay cool, but in fact, you should do the opposite. Your dog's coat insulates him from the heat, so do him a good deed by keeping it long.

If your dog spends most of the day outside, make sure there's grass for him to lie on. Grass doesn't conduct heat like pavement and patios.

Who doesn't like an occasional dip in the pool? Invite your dog in for a quick swim. If you don't own a pool, consider getting a baby pool (or in this case, senior pool) to help cool him off.

On excruciatingly hot days, skip the car trips. The temperature in a car can easily reach 130 degrees in only 30 minutes...even with the windows cracked.

Always, always, always have fresh water available for your dog. Water goes a long way in helping avoid heat exhaustion.
