Leaving Your Puppy Alone and Handling Puppy Separation Anxiety

At some point, you’ll have to leave your new puppy alone. That also means you’ll need to train her on how to cope with you being gone. She needs to understand that when you leave, you will come back; otherwise, she’s likely to become anxious and destructive. Build up your puppy’s familiarity and comfort with being left alone over an increasing period of time by:

  • Leaving her alone for short periods where she is in one part of the home and you are in another.
  • Going outside, leaving her in the house by herself for a few minutes.
  • Gradually extending your absence over a period of time, establishing your puppy’s confidence that you will return.
